Founded in 1921, the Council on Foreign Relations is an independent, national membership organization and a nonpartisan center for scholars dedicated to producing and disseminating ideas so that individual and corporate members, as well as policymakers, journalists, students, and interested citizens in the United States and other countries, can better understand the world and the foreign policy choices facing the United States and other governments.  The Council, which is headquartered in New York with an office in Washington, DC, does this by: convening meetings in New York, Washington and in other select American cities where senior government officials, global leaders, and prominent thinkers come together with Council members to debate and discuss the major foreign policy issues of our time; conducting a wide-ranging studies program where Council fellows produce articles and books that analyze foreign policy issues and make concrete policy recommendations; publishing Foreign Affairs, the preeminent journal covering international affairs and U.S. foreign policy; maintaining a diverse membership, including special programs to foster interest and expertise in the next generation of foreign policy leaders; sponsoring independent task forces whose reports help set the public foreign policy agenda; and providing up-to-date information about the world and U.S. foreign policy on the Council’s website, www.cfr.org.
CFR’s volunteer internships give selected interns the opportunity to receive training in the area of foreign policy; as well as skills training in areas such as writing, research, and program planning.

The main responsibilities of the interns will include (but are not limited to):
  • Researching topics in U.S. domestic and economic policies (see Renewing America program description at www.cfr.org)
  • Reading and summarizing academic papers
  • Compiling and analyzing data from a wide array of sources
  • Transcribing interviews
  • Proofreading publications
  • Aiding with the logistical aspects of events



Qualifications


  • Graduate student with strong background in economics and statistics
  • Willingness to learn
  • Previous internship or work experience
  • Strong computer skills with Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Flexibility and positive team player attitude
  • Copy-editing skills and flexible schedule a plus
CFR internships are Unpaid. A modest stipend is offered upon completion of the internship.

Summary:
The Grants Manager reports to the Director of Corporate & Government Relations.  She/he is responsible for securing foundation, government and corporate grants, leading prospect research, and managing renewals and stewardship of historic donors.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Writes and edits proposals, reports, articles and other correspondence for private and public funding sources and persuasively communicates the organization’s mission, programs, impact and potential to possible funders.
  • Maintains calendar and records for renewals, prospects, and related special projects for a diverse portfolio of philanthropic partners. 
  • Researches, manages and oversees portfolios of prospective foundation and corporate donors including funding trends and analysis.
  • Communicates with potential and active funders including but not limited to: responding to requests for information, submitting official letters of inquiry and thanking funders for grants.
  • Plans and coordinates grant development including research, data collection, writing, budget and supporting materials. 
  • Represents the organization and serves as spokesperson at site visits, when applicable.
  • Designs and implements a strategy to re-engage lapsed foundation donors and secure increased support from new donors.
  • Works closely with executive level and program staff on all aspects of grants coordination and execution.
  • Interacts with corporate, foundation and government funding representatives to facilitate grant stewardship, maintain current institutional support, and build donor confidence
  • Develops “best language” templates, general support proposal language, presentation decks, and other communication pieces.
  • Updates records in Raiser’s Edge database and provides detailed notes on interaction with donors.
  • Coordinates reporting and follow-up to donors and provides additional information as required by funding sources according to grant makers’ guidelines and deadlines.
  • Collaborates with program and finance staff to shape proposals and report to funders.
  • Provides guidance, coaching and supervision for assigned interns.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Qualifications


  • MBA/MPA or Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 3 years experience in grant proposal  writing, donor stewardship and fund development.
  • Demonstrated experience managing a donor portfolio including active prospecting, cultivation, grant writing, closing gifts and stewardship. 
  • Exceptionally strong written, oral, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to articulate outcomes and interpret and present program and financial information in compelling, active language.
  • Ability to manage relationships and effectively communicate with a wide variety of constituencies.
  • Extremely organized with superb attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems independently and effectively, meet concurrent deadlines, organize time and priorities, and work well as a dedicated member of a team.
  • Proficient in all Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Raiser’s Edge, Foundation Center databases and web-based research. Facility with creating well-formatted, professional documents in Word and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
The Africa Program Officer (APO) is responsible for supporting the operational and program activities of TFK’s (Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids) Africa work. He/she assists with implementation and coordination of TFK’s Africa Program and will coordinate a portfolio of grants to Africa non-governmental organizations (NGO), civil society groups and governmental agencies.
This position requires constant communication with partners and grantees in Africa, coordination of grantee activities with Campaign efforts and other international partner organizations including: identification and coordination of resources, technical assistance to grantees, and to Campaign activities. The Africa Program Officer reports to the Africa Director.

PRIMARY DUTIES
• Under the supervision of the Africa Director, support the development of TFK’s Africa strategy.
• Identify and work with potential grantees to develop effective advocacy grant proposals.
• Work with the TFK Grants Unit and Africa Director to ensure the successful implementation of grants projects in Africa. This may include helping to negotiate grant proposals, assessing Africa grant proposals and plans, monitoring funded projects, organizing appropriate technical assistance and training, and assisting grantees to achieve their project goals through appropriate program design modifications.
• Support the TFK Grants Unit to assist grantees to establish and maintain sound fiscal management practices and to submit financial reports consistent with approved program work and budgets.
• Coordinate the activities of the Africa team and the Campaign’s International Resource Center staff to assure the provision of focused advocacy, media, research and legal support.
• Assists in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual narrative and financial reports to donors; assists in responding to other donor requests and inquiries.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
• Assists the Africa Director in designing and implementing effective advocacy strategies in Africa.
• Performs other duties as directed by Africa Director.



Qualifications


  • Strong program or grants management experience.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years related work experience in advocacy, international grants, global public health, public policy, media, or research, or some combination thereof.
  • Ability to evaluate, track, monitor, and determine whether grantees’ financial internal control systems meet program requirements.
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication and in working with people from diverse cultures and countries.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment and perform effectively under pressure.
  • Master’s degree with equivalent work experience in a public interest, health, or international field required.
  • Experience working in Africa preferred.
  • Ability to travel internationally as necessary.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency with a variety of computer software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Excellent English-language writing, and editing skills.
  • Proficiency in French required; additional proficiency in Portuguese or an African language desired.

The International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) is an international non-profit organization specializing in the field of transitional justice. ICTJ works to help societies in transition address legacies of massive human rights violations and build civic trust in state institutions as protectors of human rights.

 ICTJ seeks a Communications Associate to manage the daily work of the communications unit under the direction of the Communication Director. The Communications Associate will help to implement and monitor the global and local communications strategies and coordinate the editing, design and production of ICTJ’s print and web publications. This position will be based at ICTJ’s headquarters in New York.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. PROGRAM:
  1. Manage special projects, such as, campaigns, branding initiatives, and multimedia initiatives.
  2. Assist program staff with planning and costing communications projects.
  3. Scrutinize ICTJ materials for compliance with branding and style requirements.
  4. Manage press inquiries in the absence of communications director.
  5. Draft, edit, and manage approvals for press releases with program staff, legal counsel, and program office in the absence of communications director.
  6. Supervise day-to-day work of communications consultants.
  7. Train staff and interns on relevant procedures and skills.
  8. Manage consultant and vendor relationships.
  9. Recruit and supervise communications interns in coordination with communications director and other relevant staff.
  10. Develop, update, and manage ICTJ's media database and distribution lists.

  1. PUBLICATIONS:
  1. Manage the editing, design, production, and approvals of ICTJ publications, in multiple languages for multiple platforms, in coordination with program staff, communications director, legal counsel, program office, and outside vendors.
  2. Edit, design and layout publications as requested by the communications director.
  3. Research, caption, and negotiate licensing for images; organize photographic services when required.
  4. Maintain a weekly publications forecast.
  5. Negotiate and manage print production processes; manage vendor relationships.
  6. Work closely with outside copy editors to finalize texts according to ICTJ style guidelines.  Work with outside graphic designers on publication design and layout.
  7. Work with ICTJ units to ensure publications are effectively disseminated.
  8. Assist with publication launch arrangements, the production of related materials, and assist with related media work.

  1. ADMINISTRATIVE:
  1. Assist with the development of funding proposals and budgets.
  2. Prepare and oversee grant and program budgets and prepare narrative and financial reports for funders.
  3. Develop and utilize a comprehensive financial tracking system for the program to provide regular budget review information to the Director.
  4.  Submit in a timely manner expense reports, reimbursement claims, preparation of requests for payments to consultants and other vendors.



Qualifications


Education:  Bachelor’s degree.
Experience:  Minimum of four years professional experience in communications.
Related Skills or Knowledge: 
  1. Superior ability to balance multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  2. Demonstrated project management skills.
  3. Experience with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Drupal, social media, and experience working with style guides.
  4. Experience liaising with media through new and old channels.
  5. Strong negotiating and interpersonal skills plus experience working collaboratively as part of a small team. 
  6. Strong writing, editing and design skills.
  7. High level of professionalism and attention to detail. 
  8. Fluency in oral and written English is required. Fluency in Spanish, French or Arabic is advantageous.
  9. Interest in human rights issues and world affairs is highly desirable. Experience with Dreamweaver and basic HTML coding a plus. 

Requirements:
