CFR’s volunteer internships give selected interns the opportunity to receive training in the area of foreign policy; as well as skills training in areas such as writing, research, and program planning.

The main responsibilities of the interns will include (but are not limited to):
  • Researching topics in U.S. domestic and economic policies (see Renewing America program description at www.cfr.org)

  • Compiling and analyzing data from a wide array of sources

Summary:
The Grants Manager reports to the Director of Corporate & Government Relations.  She/he is responsible for securing foundation, government and corporate grants, leading prospect research, and managing renewals and stewardship of historic donors.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Writes and edits proposals, reports, articles and other correspondence for private and public funding sources and persuasively communicates the organization’s mission, programs, impact and potential to possible funders.
  • Maintains calendar and records for renewals, prospects, and related special projects for a diverse portfolio of philanthropic partners. 
  • Researches, manages and oversees portfolios of prospective foundation and corporate donors including funding trends and analysis.
  • Communicates with potential and active funders including but not limited to: responding to requests for information, submitting official letters of inquiry and thanking funders for grants.
  • Plans and coordinates grant development including research, data collection, writing, budget and supporting materials. 
  • Represents the organization and serves as spokesperson at site visits, when applicable.

Qualifications


  • MBA/MPA or Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 3 years experience in grant proposal  writing, donor stewardship and fund development.
  • Demonstrated experience managing a donor portfolio including active prospecting, cultivation, grant writing, closing gifts and stewardship. 
  • Exceptionally strong written, oral, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to articulate outcomes and interpret and present program and financial information in compelling, active language.
  • Ability to manage relationships and effectively communicate with a wide variety of constituencies.
  • Extremely organized with superb attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems independently and effectively, meet concurrent deadlines, organize time and priorities, and work well as a dedicated member of a team.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
The Africa Program Officer (APO) is responsible for supporting the operational and program activities of TFK’s (Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids) Africa work. He/she assists with implementation and coordination of TFK’s Africa Program and will coordinate a portfolio of grants to Africa non-governmental organizations (NGO), civil society groups and governmental agencies.
This position requires constant communication with partners and grantees in Africa, coordination of grantee activities with Campaign efforts and other international partner organizations including: identification and coordination of resources, technical assistance to grantees, and to Campaign activities. The Africa Program Officer reports to the Africa Director.

PRIMARY DUTIES
• Under the supervision of the Africa Director, support the development of TFK’s Africa strategy.
• Identify and work with potential grantees to develop effective advocacy grant proposals.
• Work with the TFK Grants Unit and Africa Director to ensure the successful implementation of grants projects in Africa. This may include helping to negotiate grant proposals, assessing Africa grant proposals and plans, monitoring funded projects, organizing appropriate technical assistance and training, and assisting grantees to achieve their project goals through appropriate program design modifications.
• Support the TFK Grants Unit to assist grantees to establish and maintain sound fiscal management practices and to submit financial reports consistent with approved program work and budgets.
• Coordinate the activities of the Africa team and the Campaign’s International Resource Center staff to assure the provision of focused advocacy, media, research and legal support.
• Assists in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual narrative and financial reports to donors; assists in responding to other donor requests and inquiries.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
• Assists the Africa Director in designing and implementing effective advocacy strategies in Africa.
• Performs other duties as directed by Africa Director.



Qualifications


  • Strong program or grants management experience.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years related work experience in advocacy, international grants, global public health, public policy, media, or research, or some combination thereof.
  • Ability to evaluate, track, monitor, and determine whether grantees’ financial internal control systems meet program requirements.
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication and in working with people from diverse cultures and countries.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment and perform effectively under pressure.
  • Master’s degree with equivalent work experience in a public interest, health, or international field required.
  • Experience working in Africa preferred.

The International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) is an international non-profit organization specializing in the field of transitional justice.  ICTJ seeks a Communications Associate to manage the daily work of the communications unit under the direction of the Communication Director. The Communications Associate will help to implement and monitor the global and local communications strategies and coordinate the editing, design and production of ICTJ’s print and web publications. This position will be based at ICTJ’s headquarters in New York.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. PROGRAM:
  1. Manage special projects, such as, campaigns, branding initiatives, and multimedia initiatives.
  2. Assist program staff with planning and costing communications projects.
  3. Scrutinize ICTJ materials for compliance with branding and style requirements.
  4. Manage press inquiries in the absence of communications director.
  5. Draft, edit, and manage approvals for press releases with program staff, legal counsel, and program office in the absence of communications director.

Qualifications


Education:  Bachelor’s degree.
Experience:  Minimum of four years professional experience in communications.

  1. Superior ability to balance multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  2. Demonstrated project management skills.
  3. Experience with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Drupal, social media, and experience working with style guides.

We do this by providing technical expertise and knowledge of relevant comparative experiences in transitional justice from across the globe.
      
ICTJ’s Sudan project is sponsored by the EC and carried out in partnership with Sudanese Human Rights Monitor (Al Marsad) and in association with the Khatim Adlan Center for Enlightenment and Human Development (KACE) and the Ajaweed Organization for Peace and Reconciliation (AOPR) in El Fashir, Darfur. The project seeks to further civil society’s long-term efforts to promote justice and accountability in Sudan, leading to actionable strategies to deal with past abuses. In a context fraught with ongoing conflict and limited scope for political action, the project will engage primarily with civil society actors in Darfur, Blue Nile, South Kordofan, and Khartoum.
 
The Finance and Administration Officer, Sudan Project is responsible for the correct and timely financial and administrative implementation of the project. She/he reports to ICTJ’s CFO via the Africa Regional Grants and Finance Associate in coordination with the ICTJ Brussels Program Manager. Operationally, the Finance and Administration Officer responds to the Sudan program needs as defined by the Country Coordinator, in accordance with EC and any other donors’ rules, budget and grant agreement. 
 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
  1. Responsible for office operations, including management of the projects’ local personnel matters and day to day operations.
  2. Oversee operational and legal matters pertaining to the project.
  3. Handle all aspects of office financial management including salaries, payments to service providers and contractors.
  4. Prepare and send regular monthly financial reports to the Africa Regional Grans and Finance Associate and  ICTJ Brussels, Belgium.
  5. Ensure that expenses are identifiable, verifiable and therefore eligible under the project’s budget by keeping all required supporting documents (invoices, proof of delivery of services or completion of work, proof of payment, service contracts, etc.)
  6. Track the financial progress of the project and ensure expenditures are in line with budgets and grant terms.
  7. Support the Africa Regional Grants and Finance Associate / ICTJ Brussels in the preparation of donor financial reports according to contractual obligations.
  8. Ensure smooth flow of cash from ICTJ Brussels to the project.
  9. Liaise with banks and manage bank accounts
  10. Ensure full implementation of ICTJ and donor financial policies and update staff with the new policies
 
  




Qualifications


Education: Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance, business administration, financial management or equivalent proven experience.

Experience: Minimum of five years progressive financial and grant management experience, preferably with the EC, NGO’s or UN.

Related Skills or Knowledge:  Knowledge of European Commission’s grant management rules and procedures highly desirable. Experience with internal audit processes. Understanding of the political environment. A team player committed to the overall objectives of the ICTJ. The Program Associate provides substantive and limited administrative support to the program of work (“Sudan project”), under the direction of the Country Coordinator; she/he is also responsive to the needs of grant and financial management, in coordination with Brussels, New York and the Project Finance and Administration Officer.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Program
    1. Actively participate in the design and implementation of an overall Sudan program strategy.
    2. Work closely with national civil society, supporting capacity building opportunities and jointly sponsoring events as appropriate.
    3. Assist the country coordinator to carry out trainings, workshops, and other meetings in Sudan and abroad on TJ issues. These include:
      1. one training workshop on documentation for Darfur activists.
      2. three Transitional Justice Essentials Courses in three locations: Khartoum, El Fasher and Geneina.
      3. three, two-day awareness-raising events in remote areas of Darfur.
      4. two, one-day consultations  for 40 civil society leaders and policymakers
      5. two organizational development participatory training and strategic planning workshops for Darfur Working Group on TJ
      6. two technical consultations with governmental and non-governmental actors at national and state level (Darfur and conflict areas) on issues of peacebuilding, reconciliation and justice
      7. two consultations with victims’ families to formalize their articulation of demands for justice and accountability.

  1. At the request of ICTJ, represent ICTJ in conferences and other events in country and abroad as required, when relevant to the objectives of the Sudan project.
  2. Regularly participate in conducting field research in Sudan and produce or assist in the production of reports, briefing papers, website updates, advocacy documents, and other outputs, including five bilingual opinion pieces on post-conflict justice, as stipulated in the annual country program. These would make available information on the state of transitional justice in Sudan to a range of domestic and international audiences.
  3. Assist the country coordinator in producing briefs and situation reports on the relevant political and security developments in Sudan; the program's main activities, achievements, personnel matters and movement; and important networking and advocacy meetings.
  4. Maintain regular contact with the European Union Delegation in Sudan in coordination with the Country Coordinator and ICTJ Program Manager based in Brussels, Belgium as required.

  1. Communications
    1. Collaborate with the Communications Unit in coordination with the country coordinator to create and maintain a communications strategy for the program.
    2. Ensure that ICTJ meets regularly with key partners in Khartoum, including national civil society, key government interlocutors, and international partners (UN, AU, EU, etc.)
    3. Ensure the application of EU visibility and communication guidelines.

  1. Networking
    1. Keep partners informed of ICTJ's activities, seeking their input and feedback, and keeping ICTJ abreast of their TJ interests and priorities.
    2. Assist the country coordinator to locate context-appropriate transitional justice in the heart of national debates on post conflict issues, justice and peace building.

  1. Administrative / financial responsibilities
    1. Responsibility for all logistical and organizational aspects of activities implemented under the project and provide support to partners to ensure smooth implementation of joint activities
    2. Collaborate with project finance and administration officer and ICTJ Brussels to maintain and provide all necessary information for financial reporting and documentation.
    3. Provide to the Project Finance and Administration Officer receipts and expense reports monthly and by the 5th business day of the following month. 
    4. Ensure that all activities are within the scope of grant agreements, are in compliance with donor rules, and are timely and effectively implemented.
    5. Assist the country coordinator in maintaining regular communications and updates on program administrative matters with ICTJ Brussels and relevant ICTJ departments
    6. Coordinate with the Project Finance and Administration Officer and the Office of General Counsel on operational and legal matters pertaining to the project.
 



Qualifications


Education: Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in law, international relations, development or relevant field.

Experience: Minimum of three years of substantive and technical experience in program administration, preferably in human rights or related field; prior knowledge of transitional justice.


Related Skills or Knowledge:  Fluent in both Arabic and English, verbal and written communication skills.  Good understanding of Sudan politics and conflicts.  Good connections and knowledge with civil society in different parts of the country. Experience and knowledge of working with human rights or similar organizations. Education: Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in law, international relations, development or relevant field.
Experience: Minimum of three years of substantive and technical experience in program administration, preferably in human rights or related field; prior knowledge of transitional justice.
Related Skills or Knowledge:  Fluent in both Arabic and English, verbal and written communication skills.  Good understanding of Sudan politics and conflicts.  Good connections and knowledge with civil society in different parts of the country. Experience and knowledge of working with human rights or similar organizations. Strong time-management experience.  Experience with implementing European Commission grants a plus.  Advocacy and speaking experience, strong writing skills.  A team player committed to the overall objectives of the ICTJ. Proficiency in MS Office Applications.

ICTJ works to help societies in transition address legacies of massive human rights violations and build civic trust in state institutions as protectors of human rights. In the aftermath of mass atrocity and repression, we assist institutions and civil society groups—the people who are driving and shaping change in their societies—in considering measures to provide truth, accountability, and redress for past abuses. We do this by providing technical expertise and knowledge of relevant comparative experiences in transitional justice from across the globe.
ICTJ’s Sudan project is sponsored by the EC and carried out in partnership with Sudanese Human Rights Monitor (Al Marsad) and in association with the KhatimAdlan Center for Enlightenment and Human Development (KACE) and the Ajaweed Organization for Peace and Reconciliation (AOPR) in El Fashir, Darfur. The project seeks to further civil society’s long-term efforts to promote justice and accountability in Sudan, leading to actionable strategies to deal with past abuses. In a context fraught with ongoing conflict and limited scope for political action, the project will engage primarily with civil society actors in Darfur, Blue Nile, South Kordofan, and Khartoum.
The Senior Associate / Country Coordinator (SA/CC) provides substantive and limited administrative support to the program of work (“Sudan project”), under the direction of the Africa Regional Director; s/he is also responsive to the needs of grant and financial management, in coordination with Brussels, New York and the Project Finance and Administration Officer.
The SA/CC is the official representative of the ICTJ in Sudan and has overall responsibility for institutional representation. This would apply to signing agreements, entering into contracts, etc. S/he is responsible for oversight of issues of discipline and integrity, to ensure that project personnel come to work, conduct themselves in an appropriate manner and ensure the integrity of the institution.

Qualifications


Education: Minimum of a Master’s Degree in law, international relations, development or relevant field.
Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years relevant experience, including substantial international experience, with an international agency and/or NGO experience highly desirable.
Related Skills or Knowledge:  Strong oral and written communication skills are required, including public speaking experience. Project and program management experience is required, along with strong analytical and research skills. Must be familiar with relevant legal issues, public policy and international affairs and have a demonstrated commitment to the field. Good understanding of Sudan politics and conflicts. Good connections and knowledge with civil society in different parts of the country. Arabic and English language skills at professional level required; knowledge of other languages at a professional level is highly desirable. Willingness to engage in substantial international travel..  A team player committed to the overall objectives of the ICTJ. Must have strong computer skills.
