The American Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) Latin American and Caribbean Division is pleased to announce a 3-month internship in Mexico. The Mexico internship will provide a law student or graduate the opportunity to work closely with leaders in both the United States and Mexico on legal reform efforts within Mexico. The intern will be based in the ABA ROLI office in Mexico City.  The volunteer internship would begin in February 2012, with a duration of ten to twelve weeks.

The ABA ROLI’S Latin America and Caribbean Division supports legal reform efforts in Mexico, Ecuador, Panama, Guatemala, Belize, Haiti, El Salvador and Honduras, and has previously implemented programs in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Brazil, and Paraguay. The program in Mexico focuses on (i) supporting law school faculty and private practitioners in their preparation for the country’s transition to the criminal accusatorial system, (ii) offering assistance to strengthening the legal education and legal profession sectors, in close conjunction with key law schools and bar associations of various regions of the country, and (iii) promoting judicial exchanges between Mexico and U.S. Judges.

Qualifications
  • Current law student or graduate with J.D. or LL.M. from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Native-level English and professionally fluent Spanish skills
  • Experience with / knowledge of rule of law issues and legal reform issues in Latin America, with particular emphasis on criminal law or Mexico.
  • Previous significant travel or residence in Latin America preferred.

Independent Diplomat (ID) is a unique nonprofit venture in the world of international relations, diplomacy and conflict prevention. Staffed by former diplomats, international lawyers and other experts in international relations, ID offers independent and confidential advice and assistance on diplomatic technique and strategy to governments, international institutions, nongovernmental organizations and political groups. Independent Diplomat currently has offices in New York, London, Brussels and Juba.
ID internships provide an excellent opportunity to be closely involved in a fastpaced international team working at the cutting edge of international affairs and diplomacy.
Internship Details
ID’s Summer 2012 internships begin in New York in early June 2012 for a mutually agreed duration of four to six months. ID prefers that its interns are available to work full-time during regular office hours.
ID operates as a dynamic team. Interns are expected to contribute across the broad spectrum of ID’s client work and geographical areas of focus. Interns’ work typically involves background research, media monitoring, preparation of official visits and assistance with drafting of meeting reports, policy recommendations and diplomatic communications.  Interns should also be prepared to assist with the smooth functioning of the ID office, including thorough contributions to general office administration and event organization.
Internships are voluntary and unpaid, but hometooffice travel expenses will be reimbursed. Independent Diplomat is not in a position to provide immigration support or visa sponsorship.



Qualifications


Required skills and experience
The successful candidates will be well organized, professional, and able to quickly digest and analyze complex information from a variety of sources. They will have strong knowledge of, and demonstrated interest in, international affairs and diplomatic relations, especially the United Nations and other international organizations. Above all, candidates should exhibit an enthusiasm for international diplomacy, conflict prevention and dispute resolution, as well as the mission of Independent Diplomat more broadly.
Previous office experience (either paid work or internships) is essential, as is the willingness and flexibility to fit in with a small and busy team. Fluency in English, excellent writing skills, and strong IT and internet research skills are essential; fluency in other official UN languages, specifically Spanish and French, would be an advantage. Experience with website design/editing, HTML, graphic design or video editing would be valued.
Focus areas
Given ID’s current operational priorities, successful candidates will likely possess one or more of the following skill sets:
1. Background and experience on climate change, including:
·         A bachelor’s degree, with strong preference for a master’s degree (completed or in progress) in a related field;
·         Understanding of the international policy framework on climate change, in particular negotiations under the UNFCCC;
·         Familiarity with the workings of the UN, particularly in the field of sustainable development;
·         Understanding of major policy priorities for countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change;
·         Background in international legal and/or economic studies.
2. Background and experience on Africa including:
·         A bachelor’s degree, with strong preference for a master’s degree (completed or in progress) in a related field;
·         Knowledge of peace and security issues in Africa, specifically Sudan, the Horn of Africa (Somalia) and/or the Maghreb;
·         Familiarity with the United Nations, in particular the structure and functions of the UN Security Council, and the African Union;
·         Field experience in these regions would be a distinct advantage.
3. Background and experience in international law, including:
·         A law degree, either in common or civil law. Experience in both systems of law would be valued;
·         Professional legal experience strongly preferred;
·         An academic background in public international law, so as to assist in the development of the legal dimension of the diplomatic advice ID provides to its clients, and to advance ID’s clients’ positions under international law;
·         General legal skills so as to assist with ID’s institutional obligations, including in co operation with ID’s network of pro bono lawyers.
·         Familiarity with the United Nations.  Knowledge of the practices and policies of the UN Human Rights Council would be a distinct advantage.

Job Summary: The Atlantic Council seeks a visionary Internet entrepreneur to oversee the transition to a next generation website for a dynamic and fast-paced Washington think tank and provide ongoing development and management thereafter. The Web Developer and Manager for Online Communications will play a central role in shaping the Council’s online brand.
The Council’s site has seen a 35-fold increase since its relaunch three years ago and generates over 10 million annual pageviews. We envision the next iteration to expand our reach by more fully integrating live streaming, podcasting, and social media and increased customization for our growing number of stakeholders and be optimized across platforms including computers, smart phones, and pad devices. The Web Developer will identify emerging technologies and ensure that the site remains on the cutting edge.
This person will oversee day-to-day relations with an outside development team and oversee the daily technical operation of the existing site and the follow-on version. The position requires technological savvy, strong administrative skills, and an ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Job Responsibilities:
  • Conceptualize and modernize the Council’s online presence working closely with Council leadership and stakeholders

Chief of Party, Haiti
ACDI/VOCA is currently seeking a Chief of Party for an anticipated Title II Development Food Aid Program in the Southeast of Haiti. This multi-year, non-emergency program will be a follow-on to ACDI/VOCA’s current Multi-Year Assistance Program (MYAP). The new program will be integrated with USAID strategies to address the underlying causes of chronic food insecurity. The program’s ultimate goal is “to reduce food insecurity, prevent malnutrition, and increase resiliency in vulnerable rural households in Haiti.” The program will focus on strengthening livelihoods, improving health and nutrition among pregnant and lactating women and children under two, and improving institutions and communities’ abilities to respond to shocks as part of the program’s early warning system.

Responsibilities:
  • Under the general supervision of the Senior Managing Director, Food Security, assume overall responsibility for the USAID Title II development and or emergency funded programs and or other USG programs based in Jacmel, Haiti.
  • Provide management oversight to all project components. Provide technical oversight to the livelihoods, MCHN and early warning system component as well as to the monitoring and evaluation (M&E), monetization and food distribution systems.
  • Ensure quality monitoring and evaluation, including the development of a monitoring and evaluation plan. Oversee activities that relate to the baseline, mid-term and final evaluations, including coordination with other Cooperating Sponsors.
  • Oversee coordination and collaboration between all ACDI/VOCA program activities within Haiti and with other future ACDI/VOCA projects to ensure that the operation is functioning as effectively as possible.  Coordinate and communicate with the various stakeholders and partners involved in project implementation. 
  • Ensure effective finance, progress, and donor reports, compliance with donor and ACDI/VOCA regulations, and efficient utilization of program staff and resources for this component.
  • Ensure that staff complete Recipient Agency Agreements (RAAs) and contracts with local organizations and ensure compliance with both donor regulations and ACDI/VOCA policies.  Ensure that project partners are implementing project activities in accordance with ACDI/VOCA’s agreement with USAID.





Qualifications


Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 5 years overseas managing large, multi-year USAID funded projects with multiple implementing partners
  • Minimum 10 years relevant food security/livelihoods experience;
  • Experience developing and managing programs related to integrated rural development with experience in Haiti or Francophone Africa is preferred
  • Familiarity with commodity management best practices under P.L. 480 preferred
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the field of people and project management, as well as strategic planning, sustainability and exit-strategy implementation.
  • Prior experience with USAID projects, procedures, policies and reporting requirements is required; prior experience with Title II projects is highly preferred
  • Effective record of building relationships with governmental organizations as well as private and community organizations is required
  • Established track record of achieving results within difficult working environments is required
  • Masters degree in a pertinent field (for example: social research, project management, international development, international business) is highly desirable
  • Fluency in both English and French languages is required; Haitian Creole is highly preferred
