CARANA Corporation, an international economic development consulting firm based in Arlington, Virginia, with an excellent reputation and known for providing innovative and leading-edge technical assistance, is seeking a well-organized, highly motivated candidate to provide project management support to several of the firm’s international projects. A portion of the candidate’s employment will allow for professional growth and exposure to exciting, innovative approaches to international development. The selected applicant would be responsible for the following functions including, but not limited to:
Perform project backstopping for several USAID and other donor organization projects involving support of home office and field staff
  • Ensure timely, accurate and detailed project reporting to USAID and other donors
  • Assist with project launch and close out activities
  • Coordinate preparation of contracts and subcontracts with area manager(s) guidance
  • Maintain client relationships at the operational level of each project
  • Manage subcontractor relationships at the operational project level (includes coordination of subcontractor consultant mobilizations, communication, and relaying of important project information, etc.)
  • Assist with project recruitment including rate calculation, salary verification, educational history, and reference checks
  • Assist with budget preparation and conduct project budget analysis on an ongoing basis
  • Review consultant timesheets for accuracy
  • Provide administrative support, including clerical tasks and maintenance of electronic and physical project filing system
  • Support for preparation of project proposals and technical reports, including background research, editing, and layout assistance
The Project Specialist will also be expected to participate in new business activities, including all elements of proposal preparation and occasional travel aboard to support those activities.

Qualifications


Qualifications
  • BA/BS degree required, in disciplines related to international economic development (business, economics, international relations)
  • Strong financial skills required, including experience with project budgeting and extensive knowledge of Excel spreadsheets
  • One to two years’ experience, preferably in international development (USAID, non-profit, private sector development, etc.)
  • Strong organizational skills, writing, research, quantitative and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team, prioritize work and handle multiple tasks under tight deadlines
  • Excellent command of English, fluency in French preferred
  • Cultural understanding and overseas experience highly desirable, experience in West Africa preferred

Deputy Chief of Party, Malawi
We are currently seeking a Deputy Chief of Party (DCOP) for the anticipated USAID-funded Integrating Nutrition in Value Chains (INVC) project based in Malawi. INVC is designed to increase food security and nutrition and reduce rural poverty through integrated economic growth, nutrition and natural resource management strategies led by agriculture value chain and market development. To achieve this overarching objective, the project will focus on value chain competitiveness, nutrition-focused market linkages and the development of agriculture-oriented organizations and local institutions

Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical leadership for cross cutting technical themes and value chain development strategies for legumes and dairy
  • Prepare and supervise work plans and other program documents
  • Conduct regular reviews of financial and logistical progress
  • Serve as a project representative and point of contact for USAID
  • Recommend, evaluate, and supervise professional and support staff
  • Liaise with donor representatives, ACDI/VOCA Headquarters, partners, and all relevant stakeholders
  • Make presentations on behalf of the project





Qualifications


Qualifications:
  • MS, MBA, or other post-graduate degree in a relevant discipline
  • 5+  years experience on international development programs focused on economic growth, trade, value chain development, agricultural development, nutrition, and food security
  • Strong supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated experience implementing programs aimed at integrated economic development, value chains, food security, and nutrition.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the latest developments in advancing good/best practices in value chain development and USAID’s value chain approach
  • Strong communications skills required
  • Contracts-management experience highly preferred
  • Fluency in English required, experience with local languages preferred

Position Summary
The Senior Finance Officer will oversee the finances for all Freedom House East Africa programs in the region. This position is based in Nairobi, Kenya and reports to the Project Director.
Some Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with programmatic objectives, financial obligations and reporting requirements according to grant agreements
  • Establish and maintain internal controls to ensure compliance with financial policies and procedures
  • Maintain integrity and ensure accuracy of all financial data, including reviewing and posting entries to general ledger, accounts payable, and accounts receivable
  • Review requests for funds to ensure requests are valid, and expenses are authorized
  • Act as point of contact with program staff on all financial issues
  • Maintain daily, weekly, and monthly back-ups of financial system
  • Assist in preparation of internal and donor audits
  • Oversee procurement of goods and services in accordance to donor and FH polices
  • Oversee maintenance of inventory records
  • Develop budgets for proposals
  • Maintain and account for petty-cash, including handling, reconciliation, and reporting
  • Process local staff payroll/allocation salary expenses
  • Other related duties as assigned.



Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in business finance, economics, accounting or related field; CPA preferred
  • Minimum 6 - 8 years of experience with EU and USG funded programs
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Knowledge of Kenyan accounting and financial laws
  • Mastery of MS Office Suite, and strong research and writing skills
  • Knowledge of all accounting principles, GAAP and automated accounting systems
  • Proven ability to effectively write daily correspondence, reports, maintain documentation, and complete required forms
  • Strong ability to plan, organize, prioritize work, and multi task to meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality regarding all aspects of work at all times
  • Prior experience working in a finance or accounting department of an international organization preferred
  • Experience supervising others preferred
