The American Islamic Congress (AIC) is a civil rights organization promoting tolerance and the exchange of ideas among Muslims and between other peoples. AIC a non-religious civic initiative is challenging increasingly negative perceptions of Muslims by advocating responsible leadership and ‘two-way’ interfaith understanding. The Grants Manager reports to the Director of Development and focuses on developing and implementing grant-writing strategies that support the short- and long-term fundraising goals of AIC. The Grants Manager manages the grants process from start to finish with current and prospective grant makers. This management process includes but is not limited to researching prospective funders; collecting, managing and synthesizing grant-related information; writing inquiries, proposals, and reports; and maintaining all foundation records. She or he oversees various grants systems to ensure that the grants fundraising and stewardship is properly tracked and recorded.



Qualifications


1.  Research
  • Identifies new prospects by researching potential foundation and corporate grant makers and monitors various sources to identify potential grant opportunities.
  • Manages and oversees a portfolio of prospective grant makers.
  • Analyzes and recommends funding opportunities to pursue from pool of prospective grant makers.
2.  Grants' Systems & Administration


  • Maintains the monthly grants calendar.
  • Strategically prioritizes work assignments to support the grants work plan.  
  • Develops systems to organize and monitor grants fundraising efforts.
  • Oversees the processing of all incoming grants and their paperwork and scheduling of all appropriate corresponding actions in Donor Perfect
  • Produces grant tracking reports from database for monthly and annual tracking, strategic planning and budget management purposes.
  •  Ensures that all data on funders is up to date in hard files, electronic files and Donor Perfect.
3. Grant Writing & Stewardship

  • Works with the Development team to set strategy for prospective and current grant makers.
  • Builds and stewards sustainable relationships with foundation and government funders. Develops contact with and facilitates meetings between grant makers and AIC leadership as needed.
  • Develops language, goals and other materials for new programs and needs identified by Director of Development.
  • Plans and coordinates grant development including research, data collection, writing, budget, and supporting materials. Writes letters of intent, follow up letters, and other grant-related documents as needed.
  •  Writes grant proposals to solicit, retain, and maximize financial support according to grant makers' guidelines and deadlines.
  • Tracks the status of funded projects and coordinates reports to funders. Works with Programs, Operations and Finance & Administration staff as needed to collect program outcome data. Writes and submits reports according to grant makers' guidelines and deadlines.
  1. Other Funding Projects
  • Assists development staff with selected fundraising activities to achieve department and organization goals, which include but are not limited to, donor recognition/cultivation events and corporate partner/sponsor projects.
  • Produces other written collateral to support broader development goals as needed.

Selection Criteria:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Excellent professional writing and editing skills.
  • 3-5 years of grant writing experience in the non-profit sector.
  • Proven research, planning, conceptual, and strategic-thinking skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and responsibilities and meet deadlines. Must be able to work successfully in a collaborative team style.
  • Must be extremely organized and detailed oriented.
  • Experience in data management is a plus.
  • Familiarity with both private and public fund sources.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as cooperatively, with individuals (staff and volunteers) from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds in a culturally diverse environment.
  • Proficiency with Word, Excel, and web-based research; experience with Donor Perfect preferred.
  • Personal commitment to the mission of AIC.

Livestock/Meat Value Chain Specialist, West Africa
We are currently seeking a Livestock/Meat Value Chain Specialist for an ongoing multiyear  program in West Africa. The consultant will provide guidance to La Confédération des Fédérations Nationales de la Filière Bétail Viande des pays de l’Afrique de l’Ouest (COFENABVI AO) or translated as, The Livestock Sector Confederation of National Associations in West Africa. This professional regional organization was established by private value chain actors and focuses on key elements of livestock/meat value chain development.

Responsibilities:
Specifically, the consultant will identify and analyze the confederation and its national federation members fund raising activities; analyze membership dynamics and develop recommendations to increase membership and improve membership services; assist COFENABVI and its newly elected (delegated/hired?) permanent secretary in developing an annual work plan. To achieve this objective, the consultant will perform the following tasks:
  • Develop a framework for collecting information on:
    • membership at both the federation and the confederation level,
    • services provided to individual members and national federations (services currently delivered to individual members and national federations and their level of satisfaction, current expectations of national federations)
    • contributions that members (individual members and associations) are ready to make to federations and the confederation
    • additional potential sources of revenue for the federations and the confederation.
  • Review of information received.
  • Conduct interviews with the national federations of Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire and Mali, and COFENABVI AO’s president and three vice-presidents to complement collected information.
  • Analyze and summarize information results to identify focus areas for policy decision-making and advocacy.
  • Develop a strategic proposal for membership development (identification and characterization of members), organization of member services and financial resources (resource diversification for both national federations and the confederation).
  • Assist the Permanent Secretary in developing a work plan for the next twelve months, based on proposed strategies.





Qualifications


Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in agriculture, livestock, agricultural economics, economics or another relevant field is required.
  • A minimum of 10 years’ professional experience working with professional agricultural organizations in West Africa.
  • Knowledge and experience in the livestock sector in West Africa is required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of: (i) the context of agricultural development in West Africa and especially professional organizations in the livestock sector, and (ii) approaches to strategic development of agricultural organizations.
  • Fluency in both French and English is required.

Educational and Advocacy Activities
  • Serve as an expert resource for public policymakers and other interested organizations on the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and on issues identified by the President that are important for Friends of the Global Fight to pursue.
  • Continue to build on Friends of the Global Fight's role as a respected and objective voice on the Global Fund and on the three diseases.
  • Develop and manage a comprehensive, proactive policy agenda to pursue the organization’s priorities. This includes planning a yearlong series of activities designed to educate policymakers and allies in the global health community about the importance of strong funding for the Global Fund.  
  • Guide and manage Policy Department staff in the implementation of key departmental goals and initiate or supervise key tasks, including drafting letters, legislative analysis, position statements, memos, speeches and other materials necessary to accurately convey Friends of the Global Fight's positions and recommendations.
  • Create, maintain and cultivate close working relationships with U.S. policymakers, their staff members, and other global health partners to educate them on the Global Fund and other issues of concern to Friends of the Global Fight.
  • Collaborate with other advocacy, health and international organizations to ensure common views are advanced as effectively as possible in broader coalitions.
     
Monitoring and Policy Analysis
  • Oversee the work of the Policy Department in monitoring and analyzing all public policy issues, including relevant international initiatives with respect to the Global Fund and HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and global health in general. This includes monitoring legislative and policy activities in the White House, executive branch agencies, Congress, foreign governments and international agencies/multilateral organizations, including policies developed by the Board of Directors and Secretariat of the Global Fund.
  • Work with the President, Director of Communications and Global Fund staff to identify key questions and issues that has a unique impact on the work of the Global Fund. Make proactive recommendations to the President on strategies that will help maximize U.S. government support for the Global Fund.
  • Work with the Director of Communications to facilitate strong cooperation between the Policy and Communications Departments to develop strong and effective messages to support the organization’s work among policymakers, opinion leaders, and the media.
  • Develop strong relationships with Global Fund staff, global health policymakers at the federal level and leaders in the international health community. 
  • Provide strategic guidance to the Global Fund on U.S. policy issues that affect the Global Fund or global health in general.

Leadership and Reporting
  • Direct and oversee the work of the policy team, including developing priorities and budgets, coordinating policy activities, tracking timelines and budgets, and reporting on progress. 
  • Proactively manage the legislative agenda, analyze public policy issues and trends, and report and recommend appropriate strategies and activities by Friends of the Global Fight that will maximize support for the Global Fund.
  • Provide oral and written reports to the President, staff and, if assigned, the Board of Directors on developments in public policy and the objectives and results of education and advocacy activities.
  • Implement standard practices to ensure that staff activities are in compliance with appropriate ethics and grant rules.
  • Supervise, mentor and review the performance of policy staff.

     



Qualifications


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Detailed knowledge of the federal political system and federal government processes, with particular emphasis on the budget and appropriations.
  • Strong knowledge of the Global Fund and global health issues generally.
  • Outstanding ability to interact effectively with leaders in public policy, global health and other partners. 
  • Highly developed research skills to conduct original source analysis of legislative initiatives and policy development, and to articulate how these interact with the Global Fund and U.S. policies, initiatives and procedures.
  • Superior analytical, oral, written and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Decisiveness and diplomacy, with a strong and demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and projects while working as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated skills in management, leadership and mentoring of a dynamic policy team.
  • Dedication to improving global health through better public policy.
  • Desire and ability to work well under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
     
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree is required. Advanced degree in Public Health, Public Administration or Law preferred.
  • At least 10 years of experience working on Capitol Hill, in the Administration or in the advocacy community. 
  • Experience with national and/or international public interest advocacy campaigns, international affairs or demonstrated equivalent experience. 
  • Experience working with communications experts, policymakers and public health advocates.
  • Experience directing a public health issue advocacy campaign and/or political campaign is a plus.
  • Previous experience with legislative research and tracking is desirable.
