The Atlantic Council seeks a talented policy analyst and writer to assist in the expansion of a dynamic and rapidly evolving program on cross-national social and economic policy studies. The research assistant will prepare reports and funding proposals on a broad range of domestic and comparative social policy issues. Current topics include health policy, education policy, unemployment and labor force policy, immigration policy, and public/private partnerships. The project will take a cross-national approach to what have traditionally been considered domestic policy concerns in order to develop fresh thinking.
 The successful candidate will have an entrepreneurial spirit, communicate effectively, and enjoy the fast pace of building a new enterprise. S/he will work closely with the program director and senior fellow to develop research and funding proposals for program activities. The position also involves assistance in the preparation and execution of cross-national policy conferences (see www.umdcipe.org), and other activities including: high-level speaker events; policy workshops and papers; and helping support a senior level advisory group of transatlantic economic and social policy business experts.
 We are seeking demonstrated expertise in global economic and social affairs through class work and/or experience. The position requires a strong record of organizing programs and events, excellent administrative and communication skills, superior writing ability, and a proven aptitude for business and regulatory issues.
 This position includes some international travel to organize and help conduct conferences outside the United States.
 Job Responsibilities
  • Program administration and development: Work with a senior fellow and the program director to develop programs, identify funding opportunities, write proposals, and develop high-impact dissemination strategies for work products. Maintain oversight of events, budget, and general program administration.
  • Coverage of economic and social issues and related outreach: Substantive involvement in Atlantic Council website; write short articles/op-eds/policy statements; and develop outreach to other business groups, the policy community, and the public.
  •  Staff support for a high-level transatlantic advisory group and other programs: Liaise with Board members and other senior experts; identify relevant issues; develop follow-on activities; and organize events.
  • Supervision: Train, mentor, and supervise GBE interns.  
 
About the Program on Global Business and Economics
 The Global Business and Economics Program is a policy center at the Atlantic Council that convenes business and government leaders from the United States and Europe to exchange ideas and design solutions to pressing global economic and financial challenges. Building upon and strengthening the already deep economic integration between Europe and the United States, the GBE program promotes transatlantic leadership in the global economy. Our aim is to identify areas for cooperation as well as convergence in policy in an effort to promote an open and mutually beneficial environment for transatlantic business, trade, and finance.

Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree or higher (such as a Master’s in Public Policy).
  • Strong writing and analytic skills.
  • Experience writing funding proposals.  
  • HTML and web skills are a plus.

Global Zero is hiring a U.S. Campaign Director to coordinate and execute all aspects of the Global Zero public campaign across the United States. We’re looking for an entrepreneurial campaigner, familiar with both online and offline organizing tools and methods, to join our dynamic and international team.
The U.S. Campaign Director reports to the Director of Strategy and Campaigns, and supervises campaign staff in the U.S. This position will be responsible for building the Global Zero movement in the U.S. through elite-level engagement, media outreach and grassroots organizing.
Among other things, the U.S. Campaign Director will:
  • Work with the Global Zero Campaign Director to strategize and execute successful campaigns to grow the Global Zero movement in the U.S.;
  • Coordinate with the Global Zero Program Director on track II diplomacy initiatives and high-profile events involving political, military, business, civic and faith leaders;
  • Draft and edit web content and e-blasts, and conduct extensive research for upcoming campaigns;
  • Build partnerships with government officials, celebrities and NGOs in the U.S.;
  • Manage U.S. campaign/organizing staff and refine strategies for U.S. student activism;
  • Oversee the creation/refresh of organizing resources and campaign materials; and
  • Interface with Global Zero signatories and the media.
The setup:

Qualifications


The ideal candidate will:
  • Have 3-6 years of professional experience, preferably pertaining to advocacy campaigns;
  • Be a self-starter and a strategic thinker with a creative edge, who is socially conscious, organized, detail-oriented and able to manage complex projects;
  • Have a sophisticated understanding of U.S. foreign policy and international affairs;
  • Be a highly organized project manager and skilled communicator who will work collaboratively and effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team;
  • Be a nimble utility player who is comfortable with everything from “big picture” management to on-the-ground heavy lifting, and understands that no task is too big or too small;
  • Have strong tech skills (please note all technical experience and general computer competencies in your resume and/or cover letter); and
  • Be able to excel in a young, highly caffeinated campaign office with loose structure and emerging organizational systems.

Silkworm Production Expert, Afghanistan
ACDI/VOCA is seeking a short-term Silkworm Production Expert for its subaward role on the USAID-funded Strengthening Incentives Driving Economic Alternatives for the North, East and West (IDEA-NEW) program based in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan. The Silkworm Production Expert will oversee and lead activities focusing on analyzing, evaluating and recommending a comprehensive enhancement of the silkworm production at the local level in northern Afghanistan.
Responsibilities:
  • Assess the methods of silkworm rearing currently being practiced and make recommendations to improve production;
  • Evaluate the silkworm stock currently being produced by the Livestock Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) and make recommendations for the introduction of improved varieties and where they can be accessed.
  • Make recommendations for the propagation of mulberry trees for silk production, including the identification of appropriate varieties and identification of locations where they can be sourced from.
  • Introduce improved methods of processing silk cocoons at village level, identifying appropriate equipment if necessary;
  • Carry out training of trainers in silkworm rearing and cocoon processing for implementing partner and government staff;
  • Analyze local market and discuss with ACDI/VOCA staff ways to improve linkages between silk producers and various market actors.



Qualifications


  • Master’s degree in business, agribusiness and marketing, agricultural economics or another related field is desired.
  • Must be fluent in English; knowledge of Pashto and/or Dari Persian is preferred.  
  • Experience in value chain assessment and development.
  • Previous experience silkworm production.
  • Experience working with the private sector, producer organizations and smallholder producers along the silk-worm value chain.
