Founded in 1921, the Council on Foreign Relations is an independent, national membership organization and a nonpartisan center for scholars dedicated to producing and disseminating ideas so that individual and corporate members, as well as policymakers, journalists, students, and interested citizens in the United States and other countries, can better understand the world and the foreign policy choices facing the United States and other governments.  The Council--headquartered in New York with an office in Washington, DC--does this by: convening meetings in New York, Washington, and in other select U.S. cities where senior government officials, global leaders, and prominent thinkers come together with Council members to debate and discuss the major foreign policy issues of our time; conducting a wide-ranging Studies Program where Council fellows produce articles and books that analyze foreign policy issues and make concrete policy recommendations; publishing Foreign Affairs, the preeminent journal covering international affairs and U.S. foreign policy; maintaining a diverse membership, including special programs to foster interest and expertise in the next generation of foreign policy leaders; sponsoring Independent Task Forces whose reports help set the public foreign policy agenda; and providing up-to-date information about the world and U.S. foreign policy on the Council’s website, CFR.org.
CFR’s volunteer internships give selected interns the opportunity to receive training in the area of foreign policy; as well as skills training in areas such as writing, research, and program planning.
The Council’s outreach initiative aims to engage an interested and influential group of Americans from around the country and the world by providing ideas and timely, clear, and accurate information on key international issues. CFR.org, America’s foremost Internet resource for foreign policy and national security analysis, is one of the primary tools for doing so.
The responsibilities of the intern include (but are not limited to):
  • Working in CFR's content management system to code and edit pieces for the site.
  • Photo research and cropping.
  • Assisting with research for interactive multimedia projects.



Qualifications


  • Undergraduate or graduate student focusing on international relations and/or journalism.
  • Previous administrative, journalism, and web experience; multimedia experience a plus.
  • Excellent editing and writing skills 
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Familiarity and facility with online research.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; HTML skills a plus.
  • Ability to work independently or on a team.
  • Candidates are required to volunteer at least three days per week, on an 8:30-4:30 schedule, from early September until mid-December.
CFR internships are unpaid. A modest stipend is offered upon completion of the internship.

The scholars of the Council’s Asia Studies program focus on the broad challenges facing the Asia-Pacific region today—China’s rise, regional political and security trends, economic development and technological innovation—and the options available for United States policymakers as they confront these challenges.
The responsibilities of the intern will include (but are not limited to):
  • Assisting with research related tasks for the preparation of op-ed pieces, articles, and an upcoming book. Research focus will be on Chinese foreign policy, economy, energy security, public health, resource consumption, and environmental issues.
  • Conducting web-based research utilizing both English and Chinese sources
  • Assisting the Fellow with additional short term research projects for publications and preparation for interviews and lectures



Qualifications


  • Undergraduate student with a concentration on Chinese or East Asian Studies, International Relations, Politics, Energy/Environmental Issues or Public Policy
  • fluent or advanced Chinese (speaking, reading, writing)
  • Previous experience in research and translation a plus
  • Word processing and Internet research skills
  • Strong research & administrative skills
  • Excellent attention to detail & follow-through
  • Candidates should be prepared to volunteer one to two days a week

Qualifications


  • Undergraduate or graduate student with a demonstrated interest in multimedia, journalism, and international relations
  • Experience working with photo editing, audio editing, and video editing software required
  • Experience working with HTML and XML a plus
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Must be a quick learner
  • Ability to work independently or on a team
  • Candidates should be prepared to work full-time in the summer

The Communications and Marketing department focuses on maximizing the presence of CFR in print, broadcast, and online media outlets and on promoting CFR’s roster of products, which includes on-the-record events, CFR books, Council Special Reports, Task Force reports, working papers, online publications and interactive features, and Foreign Affairs articles.  The department also works to ensure that CFR experts are visible in the news media.
The volunteer duties of the intern will include (but are not limited to):
  • Maintaining the media contact database
  • Fielding public inquiries about CFR and media requests for experts
  • Tracking and recording media mentions of CFR publications
  • Assisting staff at on-the-record events



Qualifications


  • Academic major in Communications, Journalism, or International Relations
  • Proficiency in MS Word and Excel
  • Ability to multitask and work well collectively in a fast-paced environment

The Corporate Program, the Council’s primary point of contact with the private sector, enlists the business community’s participation in and support of the Council’s activities.  Corporate members include nearly 200 U.S. and non-U.S. firms representing a wide range of business sectors, including financial services, law, manufacturing, consulting, technology, media, and others.  Each year the program hosts over 70 events in New York and Washington.  CFR’s volunteer internships give selected interns the opportunity to receive training in the area of foreign policy; as well as skills training in areas such as writing, research, and program planning.
By providing support for the Corporate Program, the intern will gain exposure to leading global companies and economic and political issues affecting international business while building important business skills. 
The responsibilities of the intern will include:
  • Researching multinational companies that may be interested in joining the Corporate Program
  • Participating in the administration of conferences and meetings, including making follow-up phone calls to invitees and staffing events
  • Maintaining accurate Corporate member records 



Qualifications


Qualifications
  • Undergraduate preferred or graduate student with a concentration in International Relations and/or Business/Economics 
  • Experience in a corporate environment preferred; prior administrative experience required
  • Excellent writing and communication skillsStrong computer skills; proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel; Nexis Lexis and Cap IQ would be pluses
