Freedom House supports the spread of freedom and democracy throughout the world through research, effective advocacy and programs directly supporting frontline activists.  We are a leader in identifying threats to freedom through our highly regarded analytic reports, including Freedom in the World.  With 13 field offices and two U.S. offices, we are supporting the right of every individual to be free.
 
Position Summary
Freedom House is seeking a full-time or part-time intern for the spring semester. S/he will focus on US government outreach, the Freedom of Expression program, and general advocacy. This internship requires a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week where academic credit may be available.
 
 
Some Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct research for publications
  • Assist with congressional outreach
  • Assist with program activities related to the Global Freedom of Expression Campaign
  • Conduct general administrative tasks
  • Assist with event planning
  • Other related duties as assigned



Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree or current college or graduate student; Political Science, International Relations, and Journalism majors preferred
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Excel
  • Knowledge of and interest in freedom of expression issues
  • Familiarity with US government budgeting and appropriations process preferred

Disease/Phytosanitary Control Specialist, Mozambique
We are currently seeking a Disease/Phytosanitary Control Specialist for an ongoing multiyear program in Mozambique. The purpose of the program is to control the spread of Coconut Lethal Yellowing Disease (“CLYD”), and to work with target households in Zambezia and Nampula provinces to diversify and develop value chains of short-term crops to reduce risks associated with monocropping.
Responsibilities:
  • Implement a plan of operation for disease and phytosanitary control of CLYD in project areas and provide recommendations.
  • Oversee the Junior Specialist and back-up support on selected issues such as review of draft document on CLYD analysis and trends.
  • Provide long-distance consultation on selected disease control activities in endemic and epidemic disease zones.
  • Provide recommendation on the most effective means of controlling rhinoceros beetle infestation.
  • Provide oversight on effectiveness of CLYD mitigation strategies.  Review maps tracking the spread of the disease and efforts to contain it. Provide regular analysis and reports on strengths and challenges of the disease-containment strategy as it progresses.
  • Provide written reports every six months and review the infestation rate methodology; provide other documentation as required.
  • Create guidelines addressing the rhinoceros beetle infestation.



Qualifications


  • Minimum of master’s degree in plant pathology or related field is required; Ph.D. is preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in tropical horticulture/arboriculture, with some experience with CLYD mitigation preferred.
  • High level of computer skills, including GIS-based mapping and database experience.
  • Fluency in English is required and fluency in Portuguese is highly preferred (Spanish fluency may be substituted).
  • Experience in Mozambique coconut sector highly preferred.

The Asahi Shimbun is Japan’s leading national daily newspaper. Based in Tokyo, it has a circulation of more than eight million. Its North American bureaus are located in New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C.
Duties include assisting our Washington-based diplomatic affairs correspondent with articles by conducting thorough background research, attending press briefings, gathering news and views, arranging interviews, and closely following developments in the area of U.S. foreign policy, primarily covering the State Department. Some administrative support, such as transcribing interviews and other assignments, is also required.
The position will be available in late November. This is a reporting position with no article-writing or byline opportunities. Compensation includes overtime pay, excellent medical/dental benefits, and 401(k).



Qualifications


Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferable). Background in U.S. foreign policy international affairs is highly desirable, especially as it concerns the Asia-Pacific region (mostly focused on China and the Koreas). Japanese language is helpful but not required.

Position
 The Program Assistant will provide support for all JINSA programs and events, as well as general administrative support. Ongoing annual programs include but are not limited to board meetings, annual gala dinner, military base visits, annual programs in Israel and cabinet meetings around the country, particularly in DC, NY, TX, CA, MA and elsewhere.  Limited travel may be required.   This position reports to the Managing Director and is not exempt from overtime.
Responsibilities
  •  Provide support in all program areas: Maintain guest lists, prepare registration materials, organize logistics, make travel arrangements, make phone calls, conduct research, prepare for meetings, assist program staff with administrative tasks and perform other duties as assigned for general and fundraising events
  • Maintain the JINSA database and lists
  • Coordinate and update the JINSA calendar of events.
  • Write reports on events and programs
  • Write letters
  • Assemble media and donor kits for events and meetings
  • Answer phones
  • Provide other administrative support as needed



Qualifications


  • Background/interest in U.S. defense, security and Middle East policy preferred
