Title: Associate Director, Communications and Marketing

The Associate Director is part of the Communications and Marketing team that is responsible for positioning and promoting CFR, with a focus on the media relations efforts for Foreign Affairs magazine and its website, ForeignAffairs.com.  The major responsibilities of this position will include:
  • As part of the Communications and Marketing team, develop and implement media, communications, and marketing strategies for CFR and its products.
  • Working closely with Foreign Affairs business and editorial staff, managing the communications and media relations for Foreign Affairs print and online content, including tracking impact/results.
  • Coordinate marketing and strategy meetings for each issue, special sections, e-books, and other products.
  • Execute targeted press campaigns on print and web-only content.
  • Leverage the profile and reach of Foreign Affairs authors and editorial staff by arranging broadcast and other press opportunities.
  • Develop and implement social media outreach campaigns.
  • Coordinate with the Foreign Affairs business staff to improve coverage in high-end trade media.
  • Develop leads for media and content partnerships.



Qualifications


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 4-5 years of related experience in media relations
  • Proven knowledge of and interest in current U.S. foreign policy and international affairs issues
  • Excellent written and communication skills, including extensive experience writing press releases and copy editing
  • Experience developing and implementing social media strategies
  • Degree in Communications, International Affairs, or related field
  • Proven ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Excellent computer skills including MS Word, Excel, and database management
  • Candidates must be flexible, proactive, organized, and able to function in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Candidates must have the ability and willingness to work flexible hours when necessary

Position Summary
 
This position requires a seasoned education professional with broad experience in donor-sponsored international education programming and proven expertise in technical areas that are relevant to instructional systems, educational governance, early grade student assessment, ICT applications in education, instructional quality improvements, teacher training and professional development, decentralization, and community mobilization. The Senior Associate will work collegially with other educational professionals to deliver state-of-the-art educational support services across broad and diverse circumstances. The Senior Associate directs or oversees the implementation of projects in the field, contributes to new business prospecting and development, and participates in providing leadership and technical depth to ED Division and its practice areas.
 
Reporting & Supervision
 
The Senior Associate reports to a Practice Area Director and indirectly to the Vice President and Senior Director of the Education for Development Division.
Primary Responsibilities
 
As Technical Leader:
  • Analyzes, catalogues, organizes the firm's experience related to ED practice areas.
  • Distills current and past activities into best practices and coherent approaches.
  • Provides technical guidance to Home Office staff and Chiefs of Party in the field.
As Marketer and Business Developer
  • Helps to analyze the marketplace and identifies new business targets and leads or contributes significantly to capture preparation.
  • Analyzes the competitive field and helps to develop fitting alliances and strategic partnerships.
  • Plays a leading role in the business development process as a proposal leader or writer.
  • Helps to develop sophisticated market strategies to position the firm as a leading contender for specific market opportunities.
As Manager
  • Works with Home Office staff and COPs to ensure projects achieve contract/agreement deliverables.
  • Troubleshoots technical, contractual, and personnel issues when they arise; serves as a conduit for negotiation with corporate offices and senior management. Ensures compliance to the firm's policies and procedures.
  • Serves as Project Director on selected projects or as interim project director as needed.
  • Manages the firm's senior-level relationship with the client.
  • Manages the firm's senior-level relationship with sub-contractor and services providers (in collaboration with the firm's Office of Contracts)
  • Oversees the preparation of quarterly and annual reports to the client.
  • Assists in recruiting of key personnel and consultants.
  • Over time, provides technical and programmatic coherence to project design and execution.
As a senior member of the ED Division
  • Participates in division management, planning, and strategic decision-making.
  • Contributes to the creation of a technically rigorous and intellectually nurturing environment.

The Atlantic Council’s Program on International Security seeks well-organized, highly reliable, motivated candidates who thrive in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate initiative, knowledge and interest in NATO and transatlantic security.
Interns for the Program on International Security at the Atlantic Council are vital contributors to the program’s fast-paced activities. This internship is an exciting opportunity to support work on NATO and transatlantic security in the months leading up to the NATO summit in Chicago in May 2012 at the leading think tank on transatlantic security in the United States.
The mission of the Atlantic Council is to renew the transatlantic community for 21st century global challenges. The Program on International Security addresses critical issues in international security relevant to the United States and its European allies and partners.  This includes a particular focus on NATO, Transatlantic security, European security and defense policy, and US national security policy and decision-making vis-à-vis its European allies.
The Program conducts research and project activities on these and other topics, which includes public speeches by senior US and international policy makers and military commanders; off-the-record briefings, dinners and strategy sessions with senior US and international policy and military officials; research and writing for publications, issue briefs, and the New Atlanticist policy analysis blog; drafting proposals for fundraising efforts, and other associated activities.
The position is non-paid, but candidates gain valuable skills, experience, knowledge, and contacts in the US and international policy community.
Interns for the International Security Program provide important research and logistical support to assist these efforts and support program staff.  Interns work closely with the Program Director, his deputies, assistant directors, and the Senior Fellows from the US military and State Department in supporting the activities of the Program.  Interns are also encouraged to pursue their own research projects and to write and publish their own policy briefs or blog posts.
Duties are not limited to, but will include:
  • Conduct research to support the activities of the Director and his deputies.
  • Support for the Council’s activities in the run-up-to the NATO 2012 Chicago Summit.
  • Produce the daily international security news brief.
  • Manage program contacts and knowledge.
  • Draft correspondence and take notes at Council roundtables and strategy sessions for program archives.
  • Handle logistical issues for program events and activities.
  • Write analytical pieces for publication on the New Atlanticist blog.
  • Help draft policy briefs and task force reports.  
Each intern is responsible for completing all tasks stated above and other duties as assigned.



Qualifications


  • Must be at least a college junior in good standing, a graduate student or a recent graduate.
  • Must demonstrate proven interest in NATO and transatlantic security.
  • Must work well with others and interact professionally with senior figures.
  • Must have at least a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale), or equivalent from a non-US institution.
  •  Must be eligible to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
