Fellow/Senior Fellow, Asia-Pacific Security
The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) seeks to hire a dynamic Fellow/Senior Fellow focused on security in the Asia-Pacific region. He or she will contribute to CNAS’ Asia-Pacific Security Program, which focuses on the burgeoning military modernization and growing integration of the region as global power shifts from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The position requires significant policy analysis, extensive writing for publication, project management, and interaction with high level domestic and international military and government officials, business leaders and the media. Expected start date is winter 2012.
Responsibilities
• Research and Analysis
o Write reports, policy briefs, articles, blog posts and other publications related to Asia-Pacific security and U.S. national security policy;
o Contribute to research projects regarding U.S. national security in conjunction with CNAS and outside authors.
• Project Design, Management, and Implementation
o Conceptualize new research projects;
o Plan, manage, and coordinate research projects with the CNAS research and external relations team;
o Research, draft and edit project reports and assessments;
o Manage project funding and budgets;
o Design and manage research and policy events;
o Travel as necessary to fulfill project requirements;
o Manage and adhere to CNAS editing and production standards.
• Outreach
o Establish and maintain relationships with project funders and principle constituents;
o Liaise with critical domestic and international government officials, policy makers, advisors, and business leaders;
o Coordinate briefings and outreach with CNAS External Relations team;
o Engage with media through interviews and social media tools;
o Represent CNAS in the security and policy communities.
• Institutional Engagement
o Advance the institutional mission;
o Formally and informally mentor the next generation of security leaders at CNAS;
o Engage in personnel recruitment including interview participation;
o Provide constructive feedback on and critiques to CNAS research publications;
o Staff CNAS activities as needed;
o Fulfill other duties as required.

Qualifications
Background Qualifications
• Advanced degree in related subject and demonstrated expertise on China or the Asia-Pacific region;
• Project management experience in developing and implementing work plans; supervising, supporting and working well with others;
• Demonstrated publication history;
• Chinese language skills are strongly preferred;
• Demonstrated experience and interest in national security policy;
• Legal right to work in the United States.

• Takes initiative and has a track record as a self-starter;
• Has strong multitasking, time management, problem identification, and prioritization skills;
• Maintains confidentiality, especially with regard to judging the quality of data and competing information sources;
• Demonstrates rigorous analysis, strong writing and diligent self-editing.
