The Atlantic Council’s Program on International Security seeks well-organized, highly reliable, motivated candidates who thrive in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate initiative, knowledge and interest in NATO and transatlantic security.
Interns for the Program on International Security at the Atlantic Council are vital contributors to the program’s fast-paced activities. This internship is an exciting opportunity to support work on NATO and transatlantic security in the months leading up to the NATO summit in Chicago in May 2012 at the leading think tank on transatlantic security in the United States.
The mission of the Atlantic Council is to renew the transatlantic community for 21st century global challenges. The Program on International Security addresses critical issues in international security relevant to the United States and its European allies and partners. This includes a particular focus on NATO, Transatlantic security, European security and defense policy, and US national security policy and decision-making vis-à-vis its European allies.
The Program conducts research and project activities on these and other topics, which includes public speeches by senior US and international policy makers and military commanders; off-the-record briefings, dinners and strategy sessions with senior US and international policy and military officials; research and writing for publications, issue briefs, and the New Atlanticist policy analysis blog; drafting proposals for fundraising efforts, and other associated activities.
The position is non-paid, but candidates gain valuable skills, experience, knowledge, and contacts in the US and international policy community.
Interns for the International Security Program provide important research and logistical support to assist these efforts and support program staff. Interns work closely with the Program Director, his deputies, assistant directors, and the Senior Fellows from the US military and State Department in supporting the activities of the Program. Interns are also encouraged to pursue their own research projects and to write and publish their own policy briefs or blog posts.
Duties are not limited to, but will include:
- Conduct research to support the activities of the Director and his deputies.
- Support for the Council’s activities in the run-up-to the NATO 2012 Chicago Summit.
- Produce the daily international security news brief.
- Manage program contacts and knowledge.
- Draft correspondence and take notes at Council roundtables and strategy sessions for program archives.
- Handle logistical issues for program events and activities.
- Write analytical pieces for publication on the New Atlanticist blog.
- Help draft policy briefs and task force reports.
Qualifications
- Must be at least a college junior in good standing, a graduate student or a recent graduate.
- Must demonstrate proven interest in NATO and transatlantic security.
- Must work well with others and interact professionally with senior figures.
- Must have at least a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale), or equivalent from a non-US institution.
- Must be eligible to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
