The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) is an independent, nonpartisan membership organization, think tank, and publisher dedicated to being a resource for its members, government officials, business executives, journalists, educators and students, civic and religious leaders, and other interested citizens in order to help them better understand the world and the foreign policy choices facing the United States and other countries. Founded in 1921, CFR carries out its mission by maintaining a diverse membership, with special programs to promote interest and develop expertise in the next generation of foreign policy leaders; convening meetings at its headquarters in New York and in Washington, DC, and other cities where senior government officials, members of Congress, global leaders, and prominent thinkers come together with CFR members to discuss and debate major international issues; supporting a Studies Program that fosters independent research, enabling CFR scholars to produce articles, reports, and books and hold roundtables that analyze foreign policy issues and make concrete policy recommendations; publishing Foreign Affairs, the preeminent journal on international affairs and U.S. foreign policy; sponsoring Independent Task Forces that produce reports with both findings and policy prescriptions on the most important foreign policy topics; and providing up-to-date information and analysis about world events and American foreign policy on its website, CFR.org.
CFR’s volunteer internships give selected interns the opportunity to receive training in the area of foreign policy; as well as skills training in areas such as writing, research, and program planning.
The Council has an internship available in the Civil Society, Markets, and Democracy Initiative, a project of the David Rockefeller Studies Program.
The main responsibilities of the intern will include:
  • Conducting basic research for background information, the preparation of meetings and events, and the preparation of written materials on issues related to economic, political, and social development.
  • Assisting with coordination of events including arranging mailings, helping to prepare background papers and materials for distribution, and providing other logistical support.
  • Attending general Council meetings and other programs on foreign policy issues, as time permits.



Qualifications


  • Pursuing BA with an educational concentration in International Relations, international economics, or a related field
  • Proven interest in and understanding of  economic and/or political development
  • Strong research and administrative skills. Related research experience in an academic or professional setting, as well as previous office experience, are preferred.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and proofreading ability
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, and strong online research ability
CFR internships are unpaid. A modest stipend is offered upon completion of the internship.

CFR is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization and relies on charitable contributions from individual, corporate, and institutional donors to help support its programs and to launch new initiatives.  The Development Office is responsible for fund raising initiatives including a $6+ million annual fund program, a planned giving program, grants from foundations and corporations, and various endowment programs.
The responsibilities of the intern will include (but are not limited to):
  • Research on individual and institutional donor prospects;
  • Developing donor profiles;   
  • Assist with data entry, filing, and mailings



Qualifications


  • Experience working in a non-profit organization preferred, preferably in the Development Department.
  • Undergraduate student studying Fundraising, Development, or International Relations
  • A general interest in non-profit organization
  • Internet and other researching skills
  • Proficiency in MS Word and Excel
  • Ability to multitask and work well collectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail
CFR internships are unpaid. A modest stipend is offered upon completion of the internship.

Position Summary
The Senior Program Officer will exercise significant responsibility for all areas of program management including strategic design, program implementation, reporting and monitoring requirements, interaction with the State Department and other funders, domestic and international staff supervision, office management, communications, advocacy, fundraising, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting. The Senior Program Officer will report to the Senior Program Manager.
 
 
Some Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for successful implementation of current programs in the MENA region, including developing trainings and other technical assistance, assessing needs, financial management, staff supervision, office management, communications, monitoring, evaluation, reporting, and other duties as needed for the success of overall Freedom House MENA operations
  • Build and maintain relationships with civil society and human rights organizations in the United States and in the region
  • Coordinate with the Senior Program Manager in DC and MENA staff to identify and pursue new opportunities for program development and funding
  • Prepare responses to requests from donors, governmental organizations, the media and the public regarding programs
  • Support Freedom House’s ongoing advocacy of democratic governance and human rights issues through occasional contribution to Freedom House publications, articles and other releases

Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred
  • At least 5 years of experience conducting democracy and human rights programs
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: strategy development, communications, advocacy and/or civic participation
  • Experience in providing technical assistance to local organizations in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regions or other developing countries
  • Experience and success in managing and supervising staff
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing
  • Expertise in USG funding sources and program management
  • Knowledge of democracy and human rights issues in the MENA regions
  • Knowledge of general accounting procedures as they relate to USG funding sources
  • Ability to write effective proposals and reports, understand and implement procedures, maintain documentation and complete required forms, and organize staff to meet multiple deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
